Making Choreography

Making choreography is a creative process that choreographers go through as they come up with new dance routines and performance sets.

The process often begins with an idea from the choreographer or when they just begin dancing to some music.

Usually it's a fairly natural process as they will put a few moves together and then try to build from there. They can try lots of different moves and combinations out or they may prefer to just do it in one or two sittings and just let it all come out.

Nearly always choreography will be created as music is played in the room. Music and dance go together and the choreographers will find that the music makes them want to dance a certain way. Working with music also enables them to create song specific routines where they can hit certain beats in the music with the moves.

In hip-hop choreography this is very common as the beats in hip-hop are the things that everyone notices. Doing moves on the beats and using choreography that 'fits' with the music can be very pleasing for the viewer.

If you want to begin making choreography as well you begin by experimenting with some ideas, any ideas. Similar to freestyle you can just put on some music and see what comes out. The goal this time being of course to come up with a routine.

This does not mean you have to come up with the routine straight away. If you freestyle for 30 secs you will have done a 30 second freestyle. However if you freestyle or work on making choreography for 30 seconds you will no necessarily have a 30 second routine at the end of it.

It usually takes a bit longer to come up with choreography as what works in a 30 second freestyle usually will not work as well in a 30 second choreography so you need to be discriminating and pick the ideas that work in this context.

If you work on making choreography for 30 minutes you will usually come up with enough small combinations that you can put into a routine and piece it together.

Once again whether you work fast or like to take your time is up to you. At the end of the day the onus is on you to create a good quality routine whatever your working methods.

You will most probably find however that when you are new to making choreography it will take a bit more time for your mind and body to come up with new combinations. With time this process becomes more natural and will come easier to you.
