Learning Choreography

Choreography refers to routines that are planned out and so can be taught in a dance class environment. Usually it is taught by the teacher/ choreographer to a group of people but can be taught one on one if it's a solo piece also.

Things to consider when learning choreography include what type of routines you want to learn and which teachers have styles similar to them.

Different teachers have different styles and finding one that you like can help you to blossom.

Learning choreography is a skill, a major skill in dance. Most professional dancers have the ability pick up and learn choreography to a high standard.

They spend many years training in this, learning many different routines during their life as a dancer.

Once you learn a routine properly it can look very impressive. A big part is also making the choreography look good as these will be the ideas of another person.

It can be helpful to know what a routine should look like so choreographers will sometimes personally demonstrate the routine, whilst others prefer to just teach it and work that way.

Although it can be initially difficult, learning dance routines is a skill that becomes easier with time and practice. What seems really difficult when you begin will become easy to you in a year's time.

Lessons that teach you different routines are normally split into different levels such as beginners, elementary and advanced so that you can find a class suitable for your current standard.

It's usually always best to start in a beginners class, not only becuase it's the easiest but also so you can become familiar with the moves and techniques in the style before trying harder choreography.

By the time you learn advanced choreography the routines will be harder and will often be taught at a much faster pace, so you must be able to learn the routines much quicker.

You can work your way through the levels as and when you are ready. If you stay dedicated and practise enough you too can be pulling off professional dance routines one day!
